Samvel Karapetian is an Armenian historian, researcher, author and architecture expert specializing in the study of the historical monuments of Karabakh and other regions in Armenia and elsewhere.

He has surveyed thousands of Armenian sites during the course of more than two decades. He is currently head of the Yerevan branch of the NGO Research on Armenian Architecture.

He is an extremely outspoken critic of Turkish planning policy. He has accused Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan of intentionally destroying Armenian historical monuments, including thousands of medieval khachkars (stone-crosses).

He presented his findings to US Congress in 2007 and to the European Court of Human Rights in 2008.

In 2007 he won the Armenian Presidential Humanitarian Sciences Prize for his work in literature.
